Foreigners in Korea are required to report to Immigration after they renew their passports to update their new passport information. No exemption!
Many foreigners are unaware of this process and most end up with exorbitant Immigration fees.
Immigration fees for failure to report this important change grow by the number of days/weeks/months of noncompliance. Sad, really because this is easily avoided. After I got my new passport, the Philippine Embassy staff stressed that I should report this change within 2 weeks of receipt of my new passport. In my case, it is within 2 weeks after April 25. Those spiels that your Embassy staff tell you? Don’t take them for granted.
There are 3 ways to report the change of passport information to Korean Immigration.
1. Set an appointment with the Immigration Office nearest you.
I live in Mapo-gu and my immigration concerns are dealt with at the Omokgyo Seoul Immigration Office. Make sure you have applied for an appointment prior to going there. You can make your online reservation here: HiKorea website
Others have experienced just going to the Immigration Office without getting an online reservation for this visit and they got entertained. I couldn’t attest to this as I haven’t personally experienced this. All Immigration transactions my family has done always go through online appointments first.
2. Report the Change in Passport Information by Fax
This is a very convenient process if you have access to a fax machine. If you are a housewife like me who doesn’t go to an office and who doesn’t have a fax machine at home, you may:
a. go to any shop with fax service – Alpha Store has it!
b. go to a community center near you and ask the staff if you need to fax your documents to Immigration
Documents to send through fax:
- Alien Registration Card
- New Passport
- Integrated Application Report(download here)
Where to Fax: 1577-1346
When to Fax: Weekdays only from 9am-6pm
How to Verify Effect of Change: Call 1345 (Immigration Hotline 2-3 days after)
3. Report the Change in Passport Information Online (most convenient)
This is the most convenient process!
- Go to the HiKorea website and register. You need to have an Immigration account to be able to conveniently avail this service. It’s easy, just click the “Join” button and follow the steps after.
- As soon as you have created your account, File an e-application and choose “Notification of Change in Registration”. Follow the process, and submit the following:
- Alien Registration Card
- New Passport
- Integrated Application Report (download here)
With an Immigration account, you can track the status of your transaction online from the time you applied, when it was received, and processed, and its corresponding result. All through and done by your fingertips.
VERY IMPORTANT: Use Internet Explorer as your browser when processing your application. Only Internet Explorer. (why is Korea still using IE?… 몰라!)

This is great although I wouldn’t even know where to go to send a fax these days. Online is definitely the most convenient way, but I find calling and speaking to a real person- the most satisfying!

I just updated my passport information on the hikorea website. I didn’t need to fill out or upload any documents. They asked for my new passport number and the issue and expiry date. I have a hikorea account. But it took less than 5 minutes. And I got a text message today saying my application wss approved.

ask lang po magkano babayaran na penalty if 1 year na di naireport sa immigration ang change of passport?

kailangan nyo pong itanong sa Immigration mismo kasi iba-iba po ang penalty fee depende sa tagal ng hindi nyo pag-report. Immigration lang po ang nakakapag-set ng penalty fee.

Hi po can you please help me, is this applicable in my brothers case, we just got our single entry visa valid till march 2019 and we are flight is on feb 14 2019 but my brothers passport got a pentel pen mark so we have to renew his passport, can we still use the visa in his old passport? thank you

I saw the answer to why South Korea uses Internet explorer.
South Korea is a stronghold of Internet Explorer users, ironically because of a law passed in the late 1990s to facilitate e-commerce security. … But the system relies on an ActiveX control and therefore requires the use of Internet Explorer.

I am curious too as to why South Korea (and most government entities I know) is using IE in this day and age. It isn’t the most secure and I don’t know anyone who uses it as their primary browser either.

I just renewed my passport and filed an e-application on HiKorea under “Notification of change in registration information.” After filling out the needed information, I waited a few days and was approved.
