Coffee, Favorites, Living in Indonesia

Cafe Hunting in Indonesia

I didn’t set out to do cafe hunting in Indonesia. But for a country where coffee cultivation began as early as the 16th and 17th centuries, I realize I will miss out on this aspect of our Indonesian life if I don’t.

Their first target was Europe when they were still a Dutch colony. Today it is the fourth-largest exporter of coffee beans next to Brazil, Colombia, and Vietnam. This fact alone makes it interesting to discover more of Indonesia’s coffee culture. Let’s start with their cafes/coffeeshops around Indonesia, primarily Jakarta as this is where I live.

It is interesting to see that cafes/coffee shops here in Jakarta are not limited to serving coffees, bread and, pastries. they also serve full meals. Others transform into a bar from a certain time.

So, let’s check out some of the cafes and coffee shops around Jakarta.

Moon Gypsy

Moon Gypsy is located along the busy street of Senopati. Conveniently located that it is drawing serious coffee lovers. Though small in size, it serves coffee you will yearn to go back to every now and then. And its proximity to offices make it an ideal location for morning coffee and afternoon breaks.

Crematology

Crematology has several branches around Jakarta. This branch below is in Senopati. Notice its wide door? That’s what caught my attention! The wooden interiors are very countryside, and manly if I may say so. Unlike most cafes here in Indonesia, this one is purely a coffee place. Just your coffee and some brownies or fudge that goes with it. No big meals!

2D Coffee and Tea

A 2D cafe has become very attractive because it is Instagrammable. It is hard to have a bad photo there. So, when I started checking out cafes, I specifically looked for a 2D cafe. But this 2D Coffee and Tea is a little bit far from my house. We had to go through a toll to get to Pantai Indah Kapuk or popularly known as PIK. When I finally had the chance, I took my two sons with me and had a quiet time here as we were the only people. If you want to have the place to yourselves for great photos, try coming here earlier in the day.

DJournal House

This is one of the most visible cafes here in Jakarta, with branches spread out all over. The branch in Senopati is the first one I’d been to with my husband. One thing I have noticed here in Jakarta, most of their cafes/coffee shops offer full meals, too. And they are, at the same time, bars offering beers and liquors.

Six Ounces Coffee

I went to this cafe last Christmas. It is very homey both indoor and outdoor. I am looking forward to going back in here without the Christmas trimmings and seeing how they maintain the coziness. Food and coffee are good, too! As with other cafes I’d been to, they also offer full meals. I was actually here for brunch with a friend.

Rumanami

Rumanami is a cafe turning into a bar in the late afternoon to night… And it’s also a boutique hotel. I actually didn’t know it is a boutique hotel until I wondered about the rooms on the second and third floors.

I can stay here the whole day and maybe write or edit or simply read. When you get up to the rooftop, it’s become a different ambiance. It’s not an easy place to find as it is at the end of a narrow road in the busy Kemang area. But patience pays off as soon as you enter its door.

Lucky Cat Coffee & Kitchen

Found this cafe through Instagram. Intrigued by its facade, my friend and I went there to check it out. Love the facade and the big tree inside! And it has a lot of hanging greens. Plants do really make a place look alive and feel homey.

Antipodian

Antipodian is another cafe that offers main dishes. So, it’s a perfect place for brunch. Well, I had brunch here twice. Once with a friend, and another time with my family. Though it’s just a square space, it’s cozy enough to have a relaxing time here with family or friends. Maybe it’s the menu written on the big board on one side and the red wall on the other side? It also has a small corner with a little playhouse for kids.

J. Coffee (JCo)

When J.CO first arrived in the Philippines, every branch had unbelievably long lines. Everyone craved for it. But, do you know that J.CO Donuts & Coffee is an Indonesian cafe restaurant chain that specializes in donuts, coffee, and frozen yogurt? Now, you know!

I didn’t know this before I arrived here in Jakarta. I was as surprised as some of you that this is an Indonesian company. Their donuts remain addicting and J.Co coffee is good.

I don’t need to put in the address here as there are many branches around Jakarta.

Giyanti Coffee Roastery

Giyanti Coffee Roastery is one of the few coffee shops I’d been to, so far, that does not serve main dishes. Just pure coffee and bread and pastry delights.

And the interior!!! You would love to spend time here as much as I did. Navigate through their stairs and small corners. It’s a small piece of space, creatively built into three “buildings”. The one section has the roastery. The other two sections are divided into 2 and 3 stories. It has a lot going on on its walls but those add to the charm, I guess. Their coffee is good, too! It’s also located along Jalan Surabaya in Menteng, the popular antique market I went to and vlogged before.

O’delice Cafe

I accidentally discovered O’delice Cafe. I was going to my booster shot at Abdi Waluyo Hospital when I noticed the facade of this cafe and made a mental note I was going here after my booster.

I’m happy I just got in and its interiors did not disappoint. It also has the cutest coffee topper. I chose the mermaid design but they have cute bear faces as well.

The lamps, table and wall tiles, and pillow cases have Moroccan vibes so it’s so nice to spend a good time chatting with friends here.

Exquise Pattiserie

Exquise Pattiserie is a small cafe along Senopati but that doesn’t stop me from loving the vibes here. Colorful, cozy, and delicious cake and pastries. Perfect!

It has an indoor and outdoor area so you can do al fresco, too if you prefer. But it’s along the roadside with nothing to shield you from car noises and pollution so I go for the indoor.

Alice at The Langham Hotel

Alice is your luxurious high tea setting.

So, yeah this is not just another cafe. High Tea is served daily from 2:00 pm. I made a reservation prior to going there to make sure we have a seat. I think it is wise that you do, too. There are two sets of afternoon tea being offered: the Alice and the Langham Afternoon Menu sets.

If you’re interested to know how much, it is for 288,000+ idr per person exclusive of drinks.

So, go treat yourself and your girlfriends to an afternoon of tranquil luxury.

Outside of Jakarta

I am pretty sure there are more cafes worth visiting outside Jakarta. I will keep on updating this blog each time I come across a cafe I would love to share with you.

Coffee Abah (Sentul)

Coffee Abah sits on the second floor of an Indonesian restaurant in Sentul. Convenient location, if you ask me. Right after your meals, just head up to the second floor and enjoy a sip of hot or cold drinks. It is also very near the football field where my sons have their training some Saturdays.

I love its colors and the coziness of the open veranda surrounding its cafe. Perfect as our waiting place while killing time before soccer practice starts for my sons.

TitikHilang Coffee (Bogor)

This one is a rare kind of cafe, with a very different theme. You don’t need to change the natural environment. It is what draws you to be there. We chanced upon this cafe on our hike in Sentul.

Bull’s Coffee (Bali)

Cafe hunting continues in Bali.

My husband and I explored the neighborhood around our hotel in Jimbaran and chanced upon this quaint neighborhood cafe. While the insides of the hotel offer luxurious ambiance, It is so worth it to go around the neighborhood of the place you vacation in. It will give you a glimpse into the non-touristy, everyday life of the locals.

This cafe is small and cozy. Plus, I love the waffles!!!

De.Celine Cafe (Yogyakarta)

This Louvre-like structure is very attractive, especially at night. I discovered this while on a night tour in the center of Jogja. The place was fully-lit and with so many people. I knew we had to visit this place, and we did.

If I may give a piece of advice, don’t come here in the morning when the sun is up. You can’t stand the heat even with the air conditioning fully on. So, my friend and I had to settle inside the cafe to watch the surroundings and sip our coffee.

But just like most cafes here in Indonesia, De.Celine also offers mealtime dishes. So, we brought our children here for dinner.

I say this is a must when you go cafe-hunting in Jogja.

What do you think about these cafes? Are there any cafes you have visited that you can suggest be included in the list? Let me know!
