We didn’t plan on a nighttime tour riding a becak in Yogyakarta. It happened so naturally when we saw how dynamic and alive the center of Jogja was. Apparently, the mood is like that every night.
Yogyakarta is home to many of Indonesia’s univerisities. It is known to be a student city because of the large student population from across all other regions. Unsurprisingly, the city is upbeat and the general vibe is friendly.
On our first night, we chose to eat at Roaster and Bear located in the city center, very near the Tugu Jogja or the Jogja Monument. It is an iconic landmark in the city and we found ourselves drawn to the mood around it. In here, we discovered the becak.
The Becak
The becak is a pedicab that is conspicuously present in and around the city center. It is like our “tricycle” in the Philippines. But the motorcycle of the becak is at the back of the attached passenger cab in contrast to the Philippines being on the side. Used to what we have in the Philippines, my friend and I were fascinated. We decided to make an unscheduled night tour on a becak.

Riding a becak in Yogyakarta should be one of the activities you should do when you’re in the city. Do it at nighttime, too when the air is cooler and when the streets are full of people out to enjoy and relax. The energy is infectious.
We paid 50,000idr per becak. I think this is the standard price and our driver was very pleasant and quite proud to show us his city.
