Merapi Volcano Jeep Adventure

One of the things we wanted to do in Yogyakarta was the Merapi Volcano Jeep Adventure. It is one of the popular activities recommended when you search the web. My search brought me to Jeep Tour Merapi:

I got in touch with them through WhatsApp provided on the website. Andi, the person who replied to my message, speaks English so it was convenient and easy to coordinate with him the package we are getting and our schedule.

We got Package II worth IDR 450k per jeep. There are a maximum of four persons who can ride in one jeep. There were six of us, so we got into two jeeps. Carmela and her daughter and me in one jeep while my son and Carmela’s two sons were in another jeep.

The staff was easy to talk to and I asked for a discounted rate of IDR 400k per jeep.

Route of our Package

We started at their base camp at Jl. Kaliurang Km 19.5 at 3 pm. We chose the 2.5hrs package so we expect to see some good sunset along the way.

The first stop was at this off-road location where you can have a good view of the volcano. Most jeepney adventure operators got to this spot and this is very popular when you search for the Merapi Jeep Tour.

The second stop was at Stonehenge. As the name implies, it is a replica, albeit a smaller one, of the Stonehenge in the UK. No matter, it is a very nice photo stop. It sits at the foot of Mr. Merapi so kudos to the one who thought about doing this replica.

After Stonehenge, we were brought to The Lost World. You can do a lot of walking and activities here. We weren’t able to go around us much because it will take so much of our time out from the package we got. If you want to stay here longer and explore, just go here outside of your Merapi Volcano Jeep Tour Adventure.

It was already getting dark when we were heading to the Bunker Kaliadem. This was built in 2001 by the Sleman Regency Government.

It has stood witness to the fierce eruption of the volcano and was meant to protect those who seek shelter. But the 2010 eruption of the volcano resulted in the death of those who took shelter inside. It is now a tourist attraction and you can still see in the site the remains of volcanic rocks and ashes.

By the time we reached the river trail, it was really dark already. You can have a glimpse of it at the end of this video:

Staff and Jeep Drivers

The staff who I coordinated with was Pak Andi. You can contact him through the WA number provided in the link and he promptly responded. Our jeep drivers were very pleasant. The driver assigned to us was more gentle in his driving, probably because we were all ladies in the car. My son and Carmela’s sons had a more thrilling ride as their driver gave them a rougher ride. I am sure they enjoyed it that way. They even had jeep trouble at the river. But all’s well after a few minutes so that only contributed to the fun of the adventure.

So there! That’s how our adventure went and I hope you get the chance to have one, too when you decide to go to Yogyakarta.
