What is IASAS?

Expat families who have been assigned to Southeast Asia most likely know what is IASAS. It is because they also most likely have school-age children who go to international schools and are members of IASAS. It stands for Interscholastic Association International of Southeast Asia Schools.

Its member countries are Singapore American School (SAS), International School Bangkok (ISB), International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL), Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS), Taipei American School, and International School Manila.

IASAS has been around since 1961 and has given excitement to students and coaches from these schools. The pandemic has temporarily halted international competition. It’s back again now that the borders have opened. Skills training in their respective sports may not have been as intense as prior to the pandemic but these kids are doing their best despite the halt. My son has shown us his determination to get into the soccer varsity of his school, JIS. And when he made it, we gave him the all-out support he deserves.

As I am writing this, I am currently here in Kuala Lumpur to watch and support my son’s first IASAS participation. He has always been active in playing soccer but his school in Seoul, the Dwight School Seoul, only has local tournaments. We admit this is another level.

IASAS participants are housed with host families in the country where they compete. While we are here in Kuala Lumpur, the students live with host families. Parents have to find their own accommodation. That is reciprocated when another country hosts events.

What are the events in IASAS?

  • 1st Season:  Cross-Country, Soccer, Volleyball
  • Model United Nations and Cultural Convention Art/Film
  • 2nd Season:  Basketball, Rugby/Touch, Swimming, Tennis
  • Math Contest & Chess [virtual, non-travel activities]
  • Cultural Convention:  Drama-Dance-Technology, Forensics-Debate, and Music
  • 3rd Season:  Badminton, Baseball/Softball, Track & Field, Golf

I only communicate with my son by phone here. He told me, “This is a good experience, Mom.”

I am sure it is!
