12 Catholic Churches in Jakarta

Even though Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, there are Catholic churches in Jakarta for the faithful. I am sharing these churches to guide you especially when you want to do Visita Iglesia on a Holy Week.

Jakarta Cathedral (Gereja Santa Maria Pelindung Diangkat ke Surga)

The Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, so it is named the Church of Our Lady of Assumption. In Bahasa Indonesia, it is Gereja Santa Maria Pelindung Diangkat ke Surga. It is located right in front of the Masjid Istiqlal, the biggest mosque in Indonesia and South East Asia. These two religious structures symbolize Indonesia’s unity in diversity.

The neo-gothic Cathedral was inaugurated in 1901 but its history dates back to 1810 when the original cathedral was first inaugurated.

Address: Jl. Katedral No.7B, Pasar Baru, Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta City, Jakarta 10710, Indonesia

Saint Stephen Catholic Church, Cilandak

I just love the feeling on the grounds of this church. It gives off serenity because of the space and the green foliage surrounding it. The wooden facade gives it warmth, too.

Address: Jl. KH Muhasim Raya No.2, RW.6, Cilandak Bar., Kec. Cilandak, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12430

St. Theresia’s Church

St. Theresia has English Masses. Just check the website for the schedule. On Maundy Thursday, I came so early, the doors were still close. But there is a grotto where you can pray. It looks like Visita Iglesia is not being practiced here in Jakarta as I see no signs of Catholics doing it.

Address: Jl. Gereja Theresia No.2, RT.8/RW.4, Gondangdia, Kec. Menteng, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10350

St. Peter Canisius College

The St. Canisius Chapel is inside Kolese Kanisius. It is a school for Middle School and High School students. The chapel is just right behind the school facade. You can’t miss it.

Mass in English is held every Thursday at 12:00 pm in the Chapel of Gonzaga Minor Seminary and every Sunday at 6:00pm.

Address: Jl. Menteng Raya No. 64 Jakarta 10340

St. Perawan Ratu (Holy Virgin Maria Church)

This church is very welcoming to English speakers. English mass schedule is every Sunday at 11 am.

Address: Jl Suryo No. 62 Jakarta 12180

St. Yohanes Bosco Parish

This is an open, welcoming parish.

And there is an Adoration Chapel! The only Adoration Chapel I’d been to is the Adoration Chapel in Jaro Cathedral in the Philippines. If you haven’t been inside an Adoration Chapel, you should go inside one. It is the most solemn experience you can have.

Then, I saw a Sacrarium beside the grotto. This is the first time I see one and I looked it up. A Sacrarium is a special sink used for the reverent disposal of sacred substances. This sink has a cover, a basin, and a special pipe and drain that empty directly into the earth, rather than into the sewer system” (USCCB, Built of Living Stones, 236).

Address: Jl. Taman Sunter Indah Blok A3, No.13-21 Sunter Jaya, Jakarta Utara 14350

Gereja Santo Paskalis Paroki Cempaka Putih

The Church of St. Paschal has a neat interior. Simple and straightforward, very pleasing to the eyes and the senses. It makes you focus on your prayers and your thoughts. The choir area makes every choir member equally stand out. All those microphones overhead will not allow you to go out of tune:-).

  3. I started to understand how the church helps the people in the local community, especially if you are a migrant. It was great to know that Indonesia embraces the diversity of religions and has mutual respect for each other’s differences. What is the percentage of Catholics in Indonesia?

  4. Visita Iglesia there must really be very interesting. Funny that I never knew what it was and that it was a custom on Holy Week to do that. That’s not a bad list, considering that Indonesia is primarily a muslim nation.
