Support H&M’s Close the Loop (Recycle your Clothes)

I’ve heard about H&M’s recycling program and have actually asked the H&M IFC Branch in Yeouido about the mechanics. But before I had the time to really do it, the IFC Branch closed already. So today, I went to the Hongik Branch and exchanged some of our old clothes. I brought 4 pieces. These were old clothes, 1 of which was a little boy’s sweater. I got a coupon worth 5,000-won.

H&M Close the Loop

H&M has a sustainability program launched in 2013. Check out this video which pretty sums up what this program is all about:

“There are no rules to fashion but one: RECYCLE YOUR CLOTHES.”

These are just some of the frequently asked questions about this recycling initiative:

How many clothes do you need to exchange for a coupon?

1 plastic bag = 1 coupon worth 5,000-won. Here in Korea, 1 plastic bag could have a minimum of 3 clothes.

How many plastic bags can you exchange?

One customer may exchange 2 bags in one store.

How much do you need to buy to use the coupon?

You may use 1 coupon when you purchase a minimum of 40,000-won worth of merchandise.

Does H&M accept H&M clothes only?

No. Any brand is accepted. In my experience, the lady didn’t even check the quality of the clothes.

Can the coupon be used in any H&M branches?

Yes. Any H&M branch here in Korea accepts the coupon.

Here’s the official statement from H&M website (source here):

RECYCLE YOUR CLOTHES

We believe fashion is far too precious to end up in landfills. That is why in 2013, we launched our garment collecting initiative worldwide. You can drop off your unwanted garments – no matter what brand and what condition – in all our H&M stores across the globe. Several of our other brands also offer garment collecting.

Once the old garments have been dropped off in a store, our partner I:CO collects and sort them into three categories:

Rewear – clothing that can be worn again will be sold as second hand clothes.

Reuse – old clothes and textiles will be turned into other products, such as cleaning cloths.

Recycle – everything else is turned into textile fibres, and used for things like insulation.

Why did it take me so long to act on this when all along I knew about this initiative? Now that I have taken the first step, I am so supporting this initiative from here on!

      1. yes, it is being done by H&M in all their branches. At least those I went to in Manila and Iloilo are doing it. This is a worldwide campaign by the brand.

  1. Yesss!! Sustainability! This has the exact same message I just hearf from Mimiyuuuh and I agree. We gobthrough so much clothes, but we shouldn’t just throw them out. Somebody else can use them or they can be made into other stuff. Hope they’ll have something like this in the philiipines!!

  2. This is so nice! When I was in Korea, I used to donate my clothes at beautiful store. I wish this concept will be adapted in the Philippines too!

  3. I hope other stores can adapt this program. It’s a good measure to recycle clothes than just letting them hang in your closet but not using them at all. At least, it will benefit others. win-win.

  4. I was looking at your website and noticed it appears the word “Millenium” is spelled wrong. I had similar problems on my site until someone mentioned it to me and I also now use software from SpellPerfect.com to keep my site error free.
