Philippine Traditional Snacks

“Food is life”, I often hear my friends say.

True! When Filipinos gather, food is a necessity. So, there’s always a colorful spread of dishes on the table. Just the sight of those delectable foods is enough to make you stay longer than you planned in a gathering. And staying means a roller coaster of laughing, crying and playful teasing. As that CNN ad from last year says, “When you’re with Filipinos, you’re with family“.

My recent vacation in the Philippines had me see and devour the most number of Philippine traditional snacks. Most of these snacks are often served as desserts, too. Most of the photos are from my Instagram and contains captions already so I add descriptions only to those which aren’t on IG. Here’s a collection of them:

SUMAN LATIK

Suman Latik

Hands down my favorite snack! I even eat this for breakfast. Suman Latik is plain suman topped with sweetened coconut strips or bukayoBukayo is another native delicacy for the sweetest tooth. Where to buy this best? In traditional markets. I think this suman topped with bukayo is uniquely from Iloilo.

SUMAN SA TABLEA

And here’s a closer look at the suman with tablea:

DINUGUAN

Puto at Dinuguan

Dinuguan is used as one of the main dishes and puto is served as a snack. Put them together, – black and white, light and heavy – they are a perfect combination. The pair can be served during meal times or they can be served as a pair for an afternoon of heavy snacking.

  1. What a variety of snacks! My favorite are all the banana ones. Fried sweetened banana is especially delicious and has been well cooked at International Markets here in Daejeon. I didn’t know that you could boil a banana. I wonder if you do it with or without the peal and what does it taste like?

  2. Wow… It looks so delicious! (especially the chocolate stuff!!) I have so many questions!! 😊 Are there snacks you can eat on the streets? Or are they more café-style kind of desserts ? And also… As my trip to the Philippines won’t be until next year, do you have any recommendations of places in Korea that are worth visiting in your opinion? I’m especially interested in the mango float, Turin and Suman sa tablea 😍
