International schools in Korea celebrate Korean important holidays, especially Chuseok 추석 and Lunar New Year 설날. This is a big way for the international school students to get to know their host country’s culture and traditions.
Dwight School Seoul, the school where my two boys are studying, have yearly program and activities to celebrate these holidays. Here is my second son dancing a Korean traditional dance on the stage with his classmates during a program at school.
My first son has hosted their school Chuseok and Lunar New Year celebrations and and has always looked forward to the Korean traditional games. His favorite has always been the Korean traditional wrestling called ssireum 씨름.
This year may be a little different compared to the previous years. The international schools celebrate Chuseok but on a smaller scale. Parents are not allowed to watch like we did the previous years. It is all because of this year’s Covid pandemic. Nevertheless, the celebration continues. It may not be as grand as the previous years, but their school still makes sure they get to appreciate this cultural celebration.
I guess, we will always remember this year celebrating events and holidays with extra precaution. This is the time where we celebrate with masks on and socially distancing. However, the true spirit of the celebration remains. So, we should not let any pandemic prevent us from imparting the meaning of Chuseok to our children. Traditionally, it is the time to be thankful for a plentiful harvest. This year, let us be thankful for our lives and our safety while living here in South Korea.
추석 잘 보내세요!
It’s nice to see that Koreans give importance to their culture by celebrating it yearly with the kids. Too bad, parents weren’t there to celebrate and watch their kids perform. Hopefully, next year would be a better celebration..:)
Thanks for sharing this traditional Korean celebration. It’s good that even in the midst of pandemic, we get to witness these special festivities but with extra precaution.
Love their costumes and dance steps. So cuuuute ❤️
I didn’t know til now that such event exists! Must be fun to attend for culture. 🙂
This year is truly about being grateful especially for still being alive because not all of us are fortunate enough to see more days and be with their family because of the virus. But how nice that some international school in Korea still celebrate Autumn Eve knowing that it’s a traditional Korean holiday. Korea did a really great job on introducing their culture to the world! That even to international kids, they’re able to incorporate it and is not limited to Koreans only.
Naiimagine ko na rin ang celebration ng Pasko at Bagong Taon dito sa Pilipinas. Nakakalungkot man pero tuloy pa rin ang Pasko dapat. By the way, ang cute nung performance nung son mo hehe
buti pa jan kahit papano ano? dito yung matitigas ulo lang me mga celebrations. ooppss. pero yung chuseok pala eh parang fiesta on our end ano? pero sa inyo on a larger scale kasi buong korea? or sokor lang? kasi satin diba usually bayan lang or something.
Oh, so the kids had to go to school to perform on video for this celebration? Love that your son is in the middle of the stage!
they are back to regular school now. parents are not allowed inside school campus since Covid started as safety precautions. this video was when he was in first grade. but they will have a celebration at school tomorrow sans parents.
Ang cute naman ng performance ng mga kids. Yun lang ka-sad lang na di nakapanuod ang marami. Hopefully, magbalik na ang normal sa lahat at matapos na ang pandemic na ito.
It’s so great that you guys could still celebrate this even in a smaller scale. I guess the situation there in korea is so much better than here in the philippines right? Hopefully, things will get better om christmas time!
Hi! I’m not familiar with chuseok, what exactly is that? Also, it’s nice that the kids in South Korea can at least still do their performance in school with their classmates, even if it means that parents wont be there for the live performance.
I wish this is what happened with our school here. I am sad to see that my kids had already practiced for their school theater performance, but everything was cancelled. Even if the costumes are already paid for and they had practiced so hard for all of it.
It’s my first time to hear about the event. So thank you because this is a new knowledge for me about one of my favorite countries. It’s a little bit sad that parents would not be able to watch the school event, nut that is of the safety of everyone. I really hope that this pandemic would end so we could enjoy events like this with our kids
This only proves that the situation of Korea during this pandemic is wayyyyy better than that of the Philippines. I am happy that these kinds of events can still be celebrated in Korea despite the pandemic.
It’s nice to know how Koreans value such traditions and try to impart them to future generations. I hope next year it will be an even grand celebration 🎉. Keep safe, Wendy!
nice to see your kids participate in this kind of special celebration. Koreans really value such tradition and i hope Filipinos will set them as a good example.
Thank you for sharing this mommy wendy 😍🥰 Napakagandang experience din po talaga nyan .
My friends in SoKor look forward to Chuseok since they don’t have to work and can catch up with family and friends. It’s nice to see how schools celebrate it with the students for a change 🙂
It’s so great to hear that Korea is very culture oriented! I would love to experience that too someday 🙂
Happy to learn that events and school tradition like this are stil being pushed through. Looking forward to expriencing this myself. 🙂
They are so cute wearing their traditional clothes! It is good the international schools celebrate international cultures too.
Ohh this is such an interesting read. It’s always nice to celebrate culture and teach it to young children early on in the life. This way, culture is more appreciated and will live on <3
Love everything about it. How informative and interesting facts , culture and history behind,

Thanks for sharing the traditional Korean celebration. Ang cute po ng sayaw nila and it’s so nice po na kids are so active and nagpaparticipate sila on this kind of celebrate but it’s so sad because parents are not allowed inside hoping na maging ok na po ang lahat nakakamiss din po ung mga ganyang celebration😊
