Renewal of Passport for Minors

When to renew your passport?

Adults and minors may process the renewal of passports a year before their passport expires. In my sons’ case, I filed the application at the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta last May 17. Their passports are set to expire on May 2023. I thought it best to apply now before we can have our summer vacation plans. It is a requirement that we all should have passports valid for more than six months or else we will not be allowed to leave the Philippines.

The luxury of time will also enable us to be stress-free and not get caught in any last-minute cramming for travel preparations.

How to renew your passport?

You need to schedule an appointment through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) website. Schedule your appointment here. You can find your applicable location on that site. In our case, I chose the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta since we are currently living here. Just follow the instructions especially after you get the confirmation letter of your appointment.

Here are the documents I prepared for my sons’ renewal application:

  • my sons’ passports and photocopy of their data page
  • printed confirmation letter that you received through email
  • application form – do not sign because this should be signed in front of the Embassy staff
  • my passport and photocopy of data page
  • birth certificates of my sons – to show affiliation
  • marriage certificate
  • 990,000 rupiah / per application – check with your respective embassies how much you need to pay

It was a quick process. My sons had their photos taken and finger-mapping done.

Processing takes 4-6 weeks but I was told it can be finished earlier. The Embassy will just email me when the passports are ready for pick-up.

True to their word, I received an email that my sons’ passports were ready for pick-up. It only took ten days.

So, check your passports now and make sure that yours is still valid so you are ready to go out and enjoy your travels once again.

  5. I just renewed my passport here in Melbourne and took 8-7weeks to deliver my updated passport. Glad that the process at PH Embassy in Indonesia is smooth as well. Best to renew our documents immediately to avoid delays. I’m happy getting my 10-year validity!

  6. Tip also, if magrerenew, try renewing sabay sabay with the family, so pareparehas ng due date, example all minors same due dates in 5 years time, and 10 for adults naman!

  7. I suddenly checked my passport if I have to renew it na 😀 Kung di pako nakapag international travel even with a 10-year validity ng passport, ewan ko nalang. HAHAHA infairness, ang bilis ng process ha.
