I have been raring to check out the black and white houses of Singapore ever since I saw them in my friend’s Facebook post. I thought I had to go and see them for myself. You see, Singapore has always been a city of high-rises for me. Not knowing much about Singapore’s history, it came as a surprise to see sprawling landed residences. The first thing that came to mind, these properties surely cost a fortune.
And they sure do!
As the Colony of Singapore was once a British colony, these black and white houses were built for British colonial families. Of course, they looked stately with huge lawns around them. Thus, the properties continue to hold large expanses of land. Modern-day Singapore is a small country so you can just imagine the value of the lots they occupy.
These days, the usual occupants of these homes are Singapore’s moneyed residents and expats. They enjoy the space and the privacy of the gated lands on which these homes were built.
The Walk
It was a hot and humid day. The sweat generously comes out of our skin making it more damp and sticky to the touch. But there was no going back for my friend Gail who I asked to go with me because she was the one who piqued my interest. And definitely no backing out for me because I was the one who put my friend on the spot.
She first brought me to Kay Siang Road then walked back to the main street and headed to Ridley Park and Dempsey Hill. The sprawling properties are there to be gawked at. The residents must be used to people jogging and walking around so they seem to not mind the stops and snaps of cameras.
Imagine living an expat life in Singapore and having the benefit of living in one of these black-and-white houses. That’s a dream for now.

I think I got the idea that there are hidden villas and residence areas in SG when I watched (and read) Crazy, Rich Asians.
I’ve never been..but husband’s been there twice, so I was told of the notorious humid weather, hehe
NPKAGANDA AT TLGANG .. VERY RELAXING .. ILOVE THIS PLACE ❤️❤️
Looks really grand and pricey knowing Singapore’s lifestyle. There are a few nalang pala of these houses. Love the architectural built though!
Never knew the history of Singapore and thanks to you Ate Wendy, cause I’ve known that Singapore also has these kinds of houses. I’ve heard that Singapore is one of the most expensive countries to live in the world. Is that true?
I love how those houses look! They are so quaint and lovely. Glad to have discovered this side of Singapore. They’re like the old houses in San Juan City or Quezon City.
First time I saw of this as well and curious to go see this myself. Wish I could visit Singapore soon and explore!
