Random Thoughts About Philippine Politics

February 5, 2025

I would sometimes write my thoughts on Facebook but for a change, I’d like to write down my random thoughts about Philippine politics here in my blog.

This is the worst time in Philippine politics. Just look at the people we call leaders. Their lack of qualifications, experience, accountability, and integrity is bad enough. But it is sadder when you see, hear, and read people voting for them.

Money used to be a powerful tool to get votes. It still is. But there’s a more powerful tool that surpasses the impact of money. Social media. Money is fleeting. It buys votes and voters spend them in an hour, in a day, or a week. On the other hand, social media crawls into one’s consciousness. It influences how people think. The state of comprehension and utter disregard of logic of a lot of Filipino voters is alarming. Voters have become too lazy to comprehend the impact of bad leadership. They just rely on social media to feed them paid information. The country is doomed.

Unless a very cunning but truly patriotic and conscientious politician comes along.

Senate Resolution 1295

Senate Resolution 1295 is a reflection of how bad morality and lack of accountability Philippine politics and politicians have. This resolution honors and commends former President Ejercito Estrada for “his legacy in public service and contributions to the country”.

What?

Let’s look at the facts.

September 12, 2007. The Sandiganbayan found Estrada guilty of plunder beyond reasonable doubt.

A month and a half after, on October 25, 2007, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo granted to Estrada executive clemency. Arroyo was also charged and arrested for plunder during her time but was acquitted during the presidency of Duterte.

Yesterday, February 4, 2025, the senators of The Republic of the Philippines approved Senate Resolution 1295 commending the convicted plunderer former President of the Philippines Joseph Estrada for his “service and contributions to the country”.

Totally devoid of accountability.

Impeachment of Sara Duterte

Today, February 5, 2025, the House of Representatives impeached Sara Duterte. It took months of political struggle to decide on her glaring display of arrogance and refusal to accept accountability. But, today, it happened! She is the second top government official to be impeached next to Joseph Estrada who was also found to be guilty of plunder beyond reasonable doubt by the Sandiganbayan.

Do we become hopeful of this development? The cynic in me is wary. Just look at the honor the Senate accorded to Estrada yesterday.

But this is a good turn of events. The Philippines is still under the “kadiliman and kasamaan” leadership because of the outcome of the 2022 elections but this is a political reality we have to swallow as a nation. At least, the impeachment complaint has been promptly submitted by the House of Representative’s Secretary General Reginald Velasco and received by the Senate this afternoon.

In social media, the DDS fanatics are very aggressive and seem to show formidable support. But even as a Uniteam, their power of support on the streets is debatable. The calls for people power to show support for Sara Duterte during the Quadcom hearings had a lame presence. Even Iglesia Ni Cristo’s prayer for unity became an embarrassing show of their supposed power.

But the Dutertes and their supporters’ blatant disregard for rules is a challenge to the country’s peace and order. This is a mob the administration is going to deal with.

Indeed the Uniteam has predictably transformed into a battle between “kasamaan and kadiliman”.

At the expense of the nation.
