Carlos Yulo wins Gold in Vault. Headlines after headlines of “Carlos Yulo Wins Gold” came out just minutes after Armenia’s Artur Davtyan’s score was shown on the large screen at the Indonesia Arena.
My Facebook live update was already typed, ready for the post button to be pressed. While I was sitting in the Media Tribune reserved for accredited members of the media, I was holding my breath. I knew Ms. Cynthia Carrion, President of Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP), and the coaches of Carlos were doing the same. Ms. Cynthia, in my interview the day before, shared that Davtyan is “very good”. And he happened to be the last to execute his Vault routine.
Watch the interview here:
Carlos was already holding the highest score in this Championship round, courtesy of his First Vault at 15.200. His second vault’s score is 14.533, giving him the Final Vault score of 14.866.
Davtyan delivered 14.800 in his first vault. and 14.866 in his second vault. His combined score gave him a final score of 14.833, cementing Carlos Yulo’s First Place in the Vault Category of the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championship 2025 in Jakarta.
Redemption
The Finals in Vault on the last day of the World Championship became a redemption for Carlos’ Bronze Medal standing from the day before in the Field Exercise. He was a little bit down, but accepting of the excellence Jake Jarman and Luke Whitehouse showed in the Field. While he was answering my questions, I could only think, “he has a very kind aura”. I wished him good luck for the Vault.
His victory showed a happier Carlos Yulo on Saturday afternoon. Watch here for the full interview:
Yulo is a Double-Gold Medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics in both the Field Exercise and Vault. That’s why it’s no wonder he was expected to deliver another set of Gold medals. Though he only got Bronze on Friday, he admitted the setback allowed him to be more motivated. In a more jovial tone, he shared that he made a bet with his coach that if he hit a 15 on Vault, he’d be treated to ice cream. It gives us a peek into the disciplined life of an athlete.
Customized Gift from an Indonesian Fan
On his last day here in Jakarta, a fan visited Carlos in his hotel. I loved how I chanced upon this random moment. Iqbal Tawakal, the Indonesian fan, allowed me to share this moment.
He thought of giving something special to his idol, something that would make him remember his win and his time here in Jakarta. He made a customized Lego figure of Carlos with his contestant number, wearing a t-shirt with Jakarta landmarks. Check out the video:
This is Carlos’ 2nd Gold in Vault in the World Championship. He got his first gold in 2021 in Kitakyushu, Japan. He also got his Olympic Gold in Vault in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Overall, this is his 3rd Gold in the World Championship, having bagged the Gold in Floor Exercise in 2019 in Stuttgart, Germany.
We will be seeing more of him as he aims for All-Around.
