(also published in Korea.net as Poppies Bloom at Sangdong Lake)
The day was perfect for us, the “Flower Ladies”, as we call ourselves. With 80’s music playing in Gail’s car, she followed the GPS pointing to the Sangdong Lake Park, the day’s go-to place in our search for flowers. The fields of poppies is a flower paradise in late Spring and early Summer.
What are poppies?
Poppies are short-lived flowering plants. They grow annually or biennially, depending on the location or the cultivation. Here in Seoul, they bloom from spring to early summer. These delicate flowers grow easily from seed. Legend has it that the Greek goddess of fertility and agriculture, Demeter, loves poppies. So, farmers would plant poppies around their fields with hopes that these will bloom and will make the goddess happy and they will be blessed with a good supply of their crops.
The park has an artificial lake, waterside deck, inline skating park, gated sports field, badminton field, plazas for performances and exhibitions. It’s a very relaxing place for families to go on weekends and for friends to relax and have a quiet picnic in.
And if you’re like us who are constantly searching for beautiful and relaxing spots, this is a place to go to. To catch the fields of poppies, make sure you visit the place before the heat of summer sets in, lest you find yourself amidst the delicately wilting poppies.
But make sure you are constantly aware of the bees – huge bees – feasting on the flowers.
I’m not in the habit of looking out for a k-drama location, but this bit of information popped out when I checked Sangdong Lake Park:
“While You Were Sleeping” had a scene shot in this park, in a field of poppies. I watched a few episodes but didn’t get this far. Suzy’s (Lee Min-Ho’s ex, oooppps this is the only info I know about her so, my apologies for the reference) crying character was here and stumbled upon the character of Lee Jong-suk. The source says this is in Episode 13:
Appreciating the fields of poppies and going around taking photos of the flowers and the bees didn’t take much of our day. We spent the rest of the day Playful in Ara Maru.
How to go there?

Great post! Looks like you found an ideal spot to sit back and watch the world go by! Whenever I see poppies I can’t help but to think of: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM0CKERlwmw
Ha!
This place is SO beautiful! I love your pictures, it makes me wanna go there NOW! Im not into dramas but the scene must be very nice, since this place looks so romantic and dreamy! I confess I am terrible at this flower hunt when spring comes and never know the best places and parks to go. Will surely check this one out, thank you so much for the tip! 😉
OMG! I’m glad you’re starting to write about Kdrama locations. I’ve watched “While You Were Sleeping” and I loved it. I’m so looking forward to read more so I add some places in my itinerary this autumn.
not really starting, hahaha.. I will be exhausted, Karla. I don’t have your energy to do drama location-searching. and besides, you’re the expert on that. No one else can do that better than you do:-).
This is so lovely, especially somewhere in Seoul! Who knew! Here in Daejeon, we also have occasional flower festivals in O-world Amusement Park or at Yurim Park. Poppies are rare though!
Looks simply gorgeous, and the bees wouldn’t put me off. I’m glad they are alive and doing their thing. Your photos are beautiful. I haven’t seen poppies too often in real life. What a treat.^^
Wow that place is gorgeous! There’s few open, nature filled places like this around Seoul so every time I find one treasure it. This one looks really special! Thanks for providing the address too, now I won’t spend time trying to google maps it; and we all know how *great* google maps in korea is hahaha 🙂
The place is really amazing. A Place like this will help you relax especially in times like this. This poppies will make a Perfect scene in k-drama. I want to experience being in a place like this too.
