“Hi Bye Mama” ended with many having teary eyes but happy smiles.
The Korean drama has a very unrealistic plot but there lies its honesty. It doesn’t try to be believable. We all know it isn’t happening ever. But the emotions of every character resonates with everyone. This is why we watched it till it’s over.
This Korean drama is a comeback of Kim Tae Hee, one of the most beautiful Korean actresses. She didn’t disappoint. She comes back taking the role of a mother, bringing with her real-life emotions as she is now a mother of two.
Who would not wish to be given the same chance as her? Coming back in human form five years after her death is a gift – and a curse.
A Curse
It is a curse because we all know she is never going to get her life back. This was very clear from the start, even though she was given that option. Coming back made her see how the people she loved became internally conflicted. From her own parents to her former husband, their love was not enough to make the impossible possible. She also sees the kindness of the people around her, especially Oh Minjeong, the current wife. It is this kindness that makes her selfless, too.
A Gift
She got the rarest chance among her fellow ghosts to experience skin-ship once again. It is this skin-ship, the capability to hug and to touch that is deprived from ghosts.
We see how the ghosts love and get angry in the drama. But they can’t touch the people they love. Cha Yuri got it when she was given this gift. And she was able to introduce herself to her child, a memory that Seowoo carried until the end. That is a most precious thing because “when someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure.”
A drama without antagonists
This is one television series that does not have antagonists. Nobody is a villain (the exorcist as a villain is negligible). On the contrary, each character battles only with their own selves. It is also the absence of antagonists that endears this drama to the viewers. We can’t hate any one of them. We have a soft spot for each of them.
When Cha Yuri and Oh Minjeong acknowledged each other’s kindness, we knew we will cry for and with them. If we rooted for one of them from the start, we knew we lost the battle. We can’t just root for someone at the expense of another’s pained heart.
The ending is just as it should be. We knew it because the series didn’t make us hope for Cha Yuri to be human again. As the story progressed, we longed with her but we know her heart is pure. She knows where she stand from the very beginning. That was clear to us aswell.
Filming locations
While watching the drama, I identified some spots around our neighborhood here in Digital Media City. Check out some of these spots here:
Walang episode yata na di ako pinaluha ng palabas na ito. First time ko mapanuod si Kim Tae Hee at naimpressed ako.

Love this. I have a review as well. Mom’s love is really the most powerful thing in the world. It will even bring you back from the dead. 😆

I super love this drama! It was a roller coaster emotions but I agree with the curse. Even though I knew from the start that she won’t come back to life, I still had my hopes. Huhu! It hurts even more! Kim Tae Hee’s acting is really good!

Just reading the summary gives me chills. Koreans are really great in making interesting stories, and the actors fits well on their characters. This series will surely be another hit.
